Today we had a midwife appointment in the office–it was Hannah’s first real trip anywhere. We loaded in the car and headed out, with relatively little fuss.
We started out by weighing Hannah. She now tips the scales at a whopping 5lbs, 15.5oz. Of course, that was this afternoon, so I’m sure she’s an even 6lbs by now.
She was born at 5lbs, 4oz, so she’s doing really well. The midwife said that they want to see babies regain their birth weight by three weeks, and Hannah’s still only 17 days old, so she’s packing on the pounds like a champ.
They also had the pathology report back from the testing that they did on my placenta. It seems that I had an acute infection of the amniotic fluid, which is a major cause of preterm labour. The midwife said that there’s no particular reason why I had this, and that it’s really just a random occurence. It’s also good news, because the risk of recurrence is extremely low. It means that there’s a reason that Hannah was born early, and it’s not just something that I’m susceptible to. The infection may or may not have contributed to the retained placenta.
Jon and I are both glad to have some answers. It’s good to know that something in particular happened, that it was a fluke, and that it’s highly unlikely that it would happen again. On the other hand, the whole thing is sort of scary. It’s scary to acknowledge that things go wrong, in spite of our best efforts, and that there’s not much that we can do about it.
