We have a hooks on the wall behind the door (makes it that much more challenging when there are a gazillion little people coats, sweater and bathings suits (don't ask) hanging on said hooks. We have a small bench, which no one sits on, but all our bags and crap gets pile on top of and our shoes get shoved under - or the dog when she was still with us. There is just enough room for 1 adult and 2 children with no bags to come in comfortably and take off your gear and head up or down. Any more and it just don't work. Our back landing is worse - it is 2 x 2 so that means only 1 person in at a time to take off shoes (the stairs have carpet) and put coat away (no hooks, only closet here). This is why I don't park in my garage in the winter....too cold to stand outside and wait for everyone to go in 1 at a time. My front and back landings is what I would change in my house...and I would put a tv and lounge chair in my laundry room - or just make it part of my kitchen!
