I have started buying my milk in glass bottles. Here in BC Avalon Dairy sells regular and organic milk in the traditional 1L glass bottle. You can get it at most grocery stores, and you pay a $1 deposit. (Of course you get your $1 back when you return the bottle to the store.) I started buying in glass because something about it appealed to me, not because I had made a well-researched decision.
Then I decided to look into the advantages of buying milk in glass bottles. What I found confirmed my choice. Here are some of the upsides:
I would buy milk in glass bottles anyway, but now that I understand how much better it is from an environmental standpoint, I’m that much happier with my choice. I feel good when I’m pouring some over my granola, or getting a glass for Hannah. Bottoms up!

I never realized there was a $1 deposit..,guess I should have returned those bottles instead of tossing them in the recycle box
I miss my Avalon milk so much. We moved to Vancouver Island and can’t get it here. Enjoy it Amber!
I used to shop at a grocery that sold milk in glass bottles! I have to admit I would get the strawberry milk. (So cute, pink in the bottle!)
I’ve read that vitamin D degrades rapidly in a clear glass bottle, so it’s better to use colored glass. Perhaps that’s an issue that’s been overcome with modern glass or storage techniques?
I don’t drink milk, but if I did I would definitely choose glass bottles over plastic.
Alison: You *can* get Avalon milk in glass bottles on Vancouver Island…at least in Victoria. I buy mine at the Market on Yates, or through Share Organics (organic food box delivery).
And yes…it even tastes better in glass! I thought at first it was just because it was organic, but I think plastic coated milk cartons, and plastic jugs leach into the milk, leaving a distinctive change in the taste of the milk. Makes you wonder, what else is coming with that added flavour?
Now we need some Vancouver Island Dairies to switch to glass bottles too!
Milk always tastes nicer out of the bottle. It takes a lot more energy to recycle hdpe milk bottles anyway, what is your opinion on the matter?
I don’t know were my daughter bought the milk so please tell me where do I return the glass bottle? Where do I locate the expiry date as the milk was sour in less than a week?
What is a URL
I think it depends who produced the milk, but here’s my local milk producer that uses glass bottles: http://www.avalondairy.com/
