Maternity and parental leave seems a lot more logical in Canada than the U.S. where there is little or none paid leave, but pro ball players and seasonal workers are granted unemployment benefits for up to 26 weeks. How ridiculous is that?

There is obviously an absence of priority in the U.S. or simply an outrageous bias against women and children.

Am I correct that it was 15 weeks until 1990, at which time it was changed to 25 weeks? My friend and I disagree on how many weeks we got with our first children, in 1986 and 1987, so knowing the exact # of weeks of mat leave in those years would answer it once and for all. Please confirm if you know, thanks.

In Quebec, Canada, the maternity leave is taken care of by the province.

You can choose between two plans

Basic Plan where you get 25 weeks paid at 70% and another 25 weeks paid at 55% of your salary. The Father gets 5 weeks on his own which doesn't affect the Mother's time

Special plan where you get 40 weeks instead of 50, but at 75% of your salary and the father gets 3 weeks.

My gosh. Between Canada and Europe... are Americans even going to have kids any more? I think this improvement in Canada is really cool. I also think it'll be cheaper for us to have kids in Germany and buy my parents airline tickets to come visit than it would be to have kids in the US. Go Canada!

Bit by bit . . . it's a good reminder that it can take a long time to make progress, but that it can be done.
