Honest Things

A while back Maria over at Conversations with Moms tagged me to write 10 honest things about myself. It intrigued me, so I decided to play along. Here are ten honest things, in no particular order:

1. I have a dream of living off the grid on one of the Gulf Islands. It’s very romantic, and it involves doing a lot of cooking, preserving, sewing, and knitting. Also swimming in the ocean, reading, and writing. But then I remember how much I love modern conveniences like running water, and I remember watching my parents drag themselves out of bed while it was still dark in order to chop wood, and I decide it will have to stay just a dream.

Isn’t it a lovely thought, though, just leaving it all behind to embrace a much simpler lifestyle?

2. I am sort of embarrassed that I speak only one language. I was fairly proficient in (high school) French at one point, able to read basic novels and speak without having to resort to English. But that was 15 years ago, and I’ve pretty much lost it. Although I am secretly glad that if I speak only one language it’s English, it does make things easier.

3. I like country music. I’m not sure if I’m a redneck woman, but I know all the words to the song. What can I say? I grew up in farm country. ;)

4. If no one is watching I drink juice straight from the jug. Or sometimes even if my husband is watching, causing him great consternation.

5. My biggest fear about having a son is that I might be some woman’s mother-in-law one day.

6. My biggest fear about having a daughter is parenting an adolescent girl.

7. My ability to wolf down the sweets is rather remarkable, and I have very little self control. I can eat a whole bowl of frosting if I’m left unsupervised. Sadly as I get older my digestive tract does not let me get away with my transgressions without exacting its revenge. But that does little to reduce my indulgence. In fact, the lack of chocolate is my biggest obstacle to eating local, there’s no way I’m giving it up.

8. I have a love of religions. I am fascinated by what people believe, and why they believe it. This has resulted in some unfortunate incidents in which people mistook my interest for a desire to convert. I read more books about religion than any other topic (aside from parenting). I’ve spent a lot of time lurking on religious message boards. If I had to choose a course of study other than Engineering, it would be Religious Studies for sure.

9. I am terrified of snakes. Spiders I can mostly handle, and even rodents don’t get my goat too badly. But snakes? There’s something about the way they slither that gives me the heebie-jeebies, big time. We don’t even have poisonous snakes in this region, but knowing they’re harmless does nothing to put my mind at ease as long as they’re snakes.

10. I hate washing the dishes. It’s my least favourite chore. When I lived alone, I would leave it until it got so bad I was washing a bowl in order to eat some cereal. Luckily my husband doesn’t seem to mind it so much.

Those are my 10 things. Now, please, share some honest things with me.

If we werent’ so differnt looking, i might think we were twins seperated at birth. Other than the boy raising, if I had a son, hiw willie and keeping it in order, would have been my fear. You would think I wouldn’t have a fear of willies, but apparently, i do.

I’ve thought about the mother-in-law thing before as well. Even though I think I have a great mother-in-law, I’m the lucky one. Out of my parent’s 5 kids that are married, I’m the only one who doesn’t complain about my in-law.

Believe me my brother and sisters have some really crazy stories.

One out of 5. Odds are not too high for in-laws.

I like my in-laws :) And I know my brother likes his…so it IS possible :)

Amber, if you like religion so much, you should watch the documentary Zeitgeist. You should be able to find it online. REALLY interesting stuff surrounding the whole concept of religion. Not to mention some other cool stuff :)

Here’s one honest thing for me: I am SO jealous you can manage a blog post every day. I have all these ideas but I just don’t get the free time to do it.

Oh, and I am terrified of raising a boy (if I ever have a 3rd and it ends up a boy).

Some honest things about me:
I’m the same way with treats. I just wolfed down a cadbury creme egg and I’m headed for another. I have to hide them on myself.

I consider myself to not have religion (like an atheist, but not officially), but I celebrate christian holidays because that’s what our families celebrate and I like the tradition.

I would really like to get pregnant soon :)

Sweeeeets!!!! I have to count calories and write down what I eat in order to stop myself from eating every sugar containing anything that’s in the house. It’s so bad. The bowl of frosting thing made me laugh. I’m SO there.

Me too. And I don’t even really like frosting.

Also, I’m afraid of the telephone.

I love my mother-in-law, but I’m terrified my daughter-in-law won’t like me. Assuming Angus is straight and gets married.

I hate wearing a bra.

First I second Carries recommendation to watch Zeitgeist! I am religious neutral. I am NOT an anarchist, I believe in a higher power, that things happen for a reason, but can’t, don’t, won’t commit to being anyone in particular.

I love your number 1 post and although I am so far from living a simple life at the moment, I WILL get there! I’d gladly leave the business of my present everyday life to live a simple life. I believe I was born in the wrong era. I should have been a pioneer women! That being said, I don’t want to give up my internet and lights etc. I just want to have those items more naturally like solar power, wind generators, wood stoves, yes I love a wood stove. I miss the beautiful stove my mom had in the kitchen when we were growing up.

I don’t mind washing dishes (as long as I have dishwashing gloves), but I hate sweeping, dusting, and ironing. Things never seem to be any cleaner after I’m done.

The Gulf Islands sound gorgeous!

ps: the willy thing is fine raising a boy – mine attends to his own and anything else is “i think that’s a daddy question”

i hope my sons are gay so i don’t have to be some woman’s MIL
