Okay, I really – Seriously – Need to move to Canada. My husband just got punished by our government for working a second part time job, which is a contract position so it counts as self-employment (even though he’s getting a paycheck from an actual corporation.) Being self employed comes with an automatic extra tax penalty. We lost a few hundred that way. Grr.

As a self-employed person, I don’t think it would work. I operate a small business, and I’m responsible for so much of the day-to-day myself, I can’t see how it would be feasible to take much time off. Nice idea on paper, I doubt it would work in practice with respect to one-(wo)man shows.

now if the whole EI system itself could be revamped we might have something.

I definitely think it’s fantastic that self-employed get the same benefits. And why shouldn’t they?
