My Daughter the Artist

Since Hannah turned 4 she has become an avid artist. She loves to colour, and her skills are improving almost every day. She mostly draws people, either real people from her life, herself, or her favourite fictional characters. (Disney princesses, anyone?) She’s also learned how to trace and print her name.

It’s a lot of fun, watching her artistic skills advance. It’s also interesting and informative to see the subjects she chooses, to talk to her about what she draws and why. But mostly I’m glad that she’s found something that she so clearly loves. It’s rare these days to not find a couple of drawings shoved into her cubby when I pick her up from daycare, and I often have to pry the markers out of her hand to get her to eat a meal.

Here are a few of her latest works. Click on the thumbnails to see the individual image, and click them again to see the full-sized version.

(Oh, and when you see her name on the page? She’s written it herself. :) )

  1. i’m finding the artwork and its progress one of the most fascinating things about watching my wee guy grow up. he’s having his artistic muscles stretched this afternoon at Place des Arts!

I LOVE this. Hannah is a very good artist. Emma can print her name, but I am morel likey to find the E in one corner, then an A some here and then the 2 M’s somewhere else. All the letters are there, just never in the right order.

When Eve was three, she would write her name with the second E reversed, so her name was perfectly symmetrical. I was kind of ticked when they corrected her in nursery school — it was the perfect artist’s signature.

    She’s really quite the artist!

  7. This is really amazing. You must be so proud. I love the detail. My son is also 4 but cannot draw nearly half as well.

Wow, I am really looking forward to seeing my toddler drawing something like this. And I have a very basic question – what drawing tools does Hannah use? Anna seems very uninspired by crayons, and doesn’t have enough control with a paintbrush.
