I have a dream. In that dream, I write a book. It’s a collection of stories from parents across Canada, sharing their experiences in welcoming their first child. The parents have diverse backgrounds and experiences, and the stories shine a light on those experiences. They let us know how well we’re supporting (or not supporting) parents through pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, adoption and early parenting. They help other first-time parents to make informed decisions, and they make everyone feel a little bit less alone.
To make my dream a reality I am collecting stories. Birth stories, breastfeeding stories, adoption stories, fatherhood stories and a whole lot more. I’m collecting long stories and short stories and stories with happy endings and sad endings. I’m collecting stories about home birth and hospital birth, unmedicated birth and Cesarean sections, midwives and doulas and doctors and nurses. If it relates to pregnancy, birth or the newborn period, I’d like to hear about it.
If you welcomed your first baby while living in Canada and would be willing to talk about that experience, I want to hear from you. You don’t have to be a Canadian citizen, or live in Canada now. My book is an exploration of what it’s like to have a baby in Canada, not what it’s like for Canadians to have babies. It’s also not necessary that you gave birth to your child – I’d love to hear from dads, adoptive parents, and families who used surrogates, too!
I will send you a bunch more info when you fill out my form below. Or, if you prefer not to use the form, feel free to contact me directly. Either way, I’d love to hear from you!
If you’d like to stay up-to-date on how my book dream is progressing, join my email list. I’ll send you updates once a month or so on how the book is going, and what else I’m up to. Feel free to subscribe whether you’re contributing or not – I need all the support I can get!
