Snow Days

The weather here has turned cold and snowy. The world is white and soft, cold and quiet. It’s very beautiful, even I can admit that. And Hannah, as an almost-4-year-old, simply adores it. She’s in raptures, announcing to all and sundry that it’s finally winter. Because in all the picture books it isn’t winter until it snows.

We have retreated indoors for the most part, because I’m not really sure what to do with Jacob in the snow. His little bunting doesn’t work in a baby carrier, he can’t sit up yet, and he’s too small for Hannah’s old snowsuit. I will admit, there are moments when I’m stuck inside with two kids and I miss my TV. Bitterly. I imagine how marvelous life would be if I could park my preschooler in front of Dora.

And then I channeled my inner creative parent. The domestic goddess I would like to be, but actually am not. You know, the sort of woman who actually has paper and crayons on hand, and who is able to engage in crafts with her children without losing her temper. In that frame of mind, the TV-free and loving it frame of mind, I decide that what we need to see us through is a project and some comfort food. So on Tuesday we baked bread (my thanks to Saver Queen for the inspiration).

I did manage to bundle Jacob off to the grocery store on Wednesday, white-knuckling it all the way there and back in my little Honda. I loaded our giant stroller in the trunk to give me extra traction, and I don’t know if it helped but I managed not to hit anything. It’s a feat – Vancouverites do not drive well in the snow. While I was at the store I was inspired to pick up a special treat to put in our hot cocoa. Because everything is better with mini marshmallows, including snowy days.

And when I could take the whining no more I bundled everyone outside so that we could turn on the Christmas lights and enjoy the beauty of dusk and snow and little twinkling orbs. After all, we have to appreciate it while it lasts. Especially because I hope it will melt, sooner rather than later. ;-)

I’ve also uploaded some new snapshots of the kids, including our adventures in the snow. You can see those here.

So glad I could provide some inspiration! :) Your bread looks great, and so do the lights! We’ve got tons of snow here too!

Ahhh…your house looks like mine…covered in snow…but it is closer to -30 here…and that is almost too cold for sledding…almost. It is nicer when you can bundle both kids up and take them outside….it will be so much easier next year, and who knows, you might be back to a green Christmas by then.

I agree with Hannah…it does feel more like winter when there is snow on the ground and the world is soft around the edges…Christmas lights look so much prettier with a snowy background too.
