When Hannah was a toddler I bought her little red rain boots. They were so colourful and shiny, and they had little faces on the bottom. Each time I saw the smiles that her footprints left I smiled, too.
One of the things that I’ve always loved about the red boots is that I knew I could re-use them with any other children I had. The truth, you see, is that I am just not sufficiently evolved to dress Jacob in most of his big sister’s clothes. I have some mixed feelings about it, but the truth stands, and I know I’m not the only mom who feels that way. But red boots? Anyone can wear a lovely set of shiny red boots.
Hannah is now almost 5 and Jacob is 16 months. The red boots (all 3 pairs in 3 different sizes – I love them that much) have been dusted off and are once again in circulation. And I am delighted to report that Jacob loves them almost as much as I do. As soon as we start getting ready to go anywhere, Jacob finds the red boots and brings them to me. They’re his favourites, and I am only too happy to oblige.
I help Jacob on with his boots, and we set off for adventure. He leads the way if I let him, making a bee-line for the swings at our local playground. Or, perhaps, chasing a crow that has caught his eye. He’s got his boots on, and there’s no stopping him.

Jacob seeking adventure in his red boots
As I race to keep up with my toddler I remember another time and another child. He is not the first one to seek adventure in those boots. I remember other crows being chased and other swings being swung in.

I know they’re only boots, but they feel like so much more to me. They’re like symbols of childhood and first steps on the path to independence. And I’m so glad both my kids loved them as much as I do.

Hey Amber,
Great post. Love the pics, your blog made me smile today, thank you. Tanya
I can’t wait until my Peanut is big enough for boots!
Too cute! I buy a lot of my son’s clothes with future children (boy or girl) in mind. I mean, come on, that orange romper with the hippo on it is too cute to be worn by only one child! And I love your red boots. I have a pair of red (cowboy) boots myself, and they make me happy every time I were them.

What a fabulous post! My girls share their boots too but we certainly don’t have “special” boots like your kids. I love the red boots too! What will you do with them once both kids have outgrown them?

Definitely a feel good post, you children are adorable!
Cute boots. I didn’t buy K’s clothes with a mind for future kids so his stuff is all pretty boy-like. In the beginning I put Em in whatever hand-me-downs we had but I admit to liking her much better in clothes that like a bit more girly. She only wears his old pjs now. Reading your post makes me feel a little wistful that I don’t have a paid of boots to give Em that are filled with the shadows of her brothers past. (But I’m alright now)

What a great post. Those boots are adorable. Maybe I will get my son some when he is older that can be passed to future children
