Tomatoes Really are Fruit

The first tomatoes are ripening in our garden. As anyone who’s ever picked and eaten a fresh, ripe tomato knows, they are something else. They’re a totally different kind of tomato altogether than the the crate-ripened ones shipped from halfway across the continent that you find in the grocery store. They’re sweet and juicy and they actually taste like the fruit they are.

My four-year-old Hannah has never been a fan of tomatoes. I’ve fed her all different kinds, including sweet fresh ones, and she’s turned her nose up. But one-year-old Jacob adores tomatoes. He flaps his arms and yells and lunges when he sees me pick one. And then he demolishes it.

Tomatoes are good!

Oh, yeah, I'm feeling the tomato

You know, if he’s going to cover himself in something, you could do much worse than a tomato from our garden. That’s some good stuff right there!

Neither of my kids will eat tomatoes (except as pasta sauce or ketchup, sigh), but I LOVE them – especially the home grown variety. They are soooooooo wonderful, and it's a great sadness to me that we don't have enough sun in our yard to grow them here.Go Jacob!!!

We would totally welcome Amelia the raider. If she'll eat cucumbers she'll be new best friend!

We planted cherry tomatoes (by accident, the plants we bought were mislabelled, we wanted beefsteak and a medium orange… doh) and now I am so happy we did! Our son loves them! I cut them into pieces and stir them into whatever he gets for dinner (rice, pasta, mashed potatoes etc). He will seek them out, pick them up,exclaim “UM!” and down the hatch they go!

How awesome you can share them with your son! When I was a kid, I hated tomatoes. My grandpa would slice them into rounds, put a bit of sugar and lemon on them, then slice them into “pie wedges” and I would eat them. LOL… I’m a sucker for a gimmick even now.

  5. There are few things in life as wonderful as tomatoes right off the vine. I’m hoping to grab a few tonight when we go pick through my in-laws garden!

  6. I should probably clarify that they ASKED us to pick through the garden while they’re on vacation so they don’t come home to a ton of over-ripe stuff. Heh.

My Hannah is obsessed with tomatoes. So crazy that we grew our own this Summer! She goes wild for the stuff. So glad that we got some sun these few weeks so the tomato plant is growing like crazy.

And did you know, botanically speaking, banana is an herb? Yes I learned that from some show over the weekend.

    Lovely pics of Jacob!

Yum! Both my boys are obsessed with “grape tomatoes,” which are just a bit bigger than cherry tomatoes. I have never seen them consumed so quickly.
