What I Learned in January 2010

Monthly reviews are my favourite tradition. Here’s how it works – every month I come up with some things I learned. Then, I ask you all to join in with some recent revelations of your own, and we all learn and grow and what-not. Or at least share a laugh at our own expense, because some of these lessons are both hard-fought and funny. Sound good?

So, without further ado, here are some things that I learned in January.

Things I learned in January

1. I discovered the beauty of dried ground cherry husks.

Lacy shell

2. I learned that I can still climb a tree rather well, even after a 20+ year hiatus.

3. I choked on my objections and realized that Jacob doesn’t mind being on a leash, and in fact in certain situations it’s a lifesaver.

Keeping the kid safe in the parking lot

4. I discovered the hard way that SimplyLinked is more reliable than Mr. Linky for all your link-up widget needs.

5. I found out that many Canadians from less temperate climates get jealous when I post photos of green grass in January.

6. I learned to check the weight before buying large, imported fruit.

7. Thanks to some bad planning, I learned that not-quite-5-year-old Hannah can push a full cart through the IKEA warehouse, but she can’t really steer. Or see over the top, for that matter.

8. I found that life is much better if I’m not so self-critical, and that perceived flaws become less noticeable with time.

9. I joined Ravelry and discovered a whole new way to waste time online. But, oh, the fibery goodness!

10. I learned that being an expert is in the eye of the beholder, and that we all have areas of expertise that we don’t credit ourselves with. One of mine is maternity leave.

What about you? What did you learn in January? Please share!

Climbing a tree, good for you! (I get vertigo just watching my kids climb one). I joined Ravelry a year ago, and have yet to find something interesting (in the crochet category), but perhaps I’m searching for the wrong stuff. I love your husks, this one looks like it was made of silver.

I’m not sure what I have learned…I’m pretty sure by the end of February I will have learned some things (such as the fact a body hurts after getting back to the gym after a 3 yr hiatus)

I will check back in then :)

I really enjoy your “what I learned” posts, it makes me think you have a little calendar beside your computer where you mark off little items as the month goes by. What did I learn? I learned that white cake mix tastes so much better as rainbow cupcakes. I learned that my three year old is very fast and has to be watched very closely…this month she shaved her top lip and made it bleed and emptied my Oil of Olay eye cream in a matter of seconds – while we were in the same room as her!

I learned that it really does start to go so fast….. Baby is now 6 months. First 30 days lasted a lifetime and now the weeks and months are spinning by and soon they will be years… sigh … suffering from premature nostalgia.

  7. Janet B says:

I learned that anything less than two creams in a Timmy’s coffee just doesn’t cut it.

  8. I learned that I’m a TOTAL klutz. I fell -quite spectacularly- THREE TIMES in the last two weeks.

I learned that a good chiropractor is a true blessing.

  9. Marilyn says:

I learned that I love geocaching.

I learned that a scary-looking alley lined with dumpsters in Gastown (Blood Alley) can hide a really unique and fun restaurant (Salt).

I learned that it’s worth stepping out of my comfort zone and meeting people I never would have met if I’d continued hiding behind my computer.

    Brilliant concept!!

Hmm, I just learned at least two or three things from this blog post. Can I count those too? *grin*

(And the green grass thing really is nauseating. So not fair!!)

I learned that it takes courage to create a life in the arts and that I am much braver than I thought.

PS: It was such a pleasure meeting Jon the other week for tea! We must do it again, next time with you too:)

  12. Jessica says:

I learned that I can still do simple things, like decorate and make decorations for holidays, with my 3 year old, even though I have an almost 6 month old. I learned that my 3 year old needs me just as much as she did when she was 6 months old, and that I need to make time for me just as much as I ever did.

Thanks for sharing your list! I love learning about you and you make me laugh too, :-)

  13. I learned that a non-fat Vanilla Rooibos tea latte is NOT an acceptable substitute for a full-fat one. And that going to the gym twice a week instead of once won’t actually kill me. Well, it hasn’t yet. It’s been a near thing, though.

I learned that I am more hands on then a lot of the other Mom’s in my sons class at the recreation centre – and I’m definitely the only one who tries to hula hoop with him – and I’m proud!

  15. Lady M says:

    I love that fish hat!

Folks in my office love the big green leaf canopies so much that I may need to make a return visit to IKEA soon. I will remember not to let the kids handle the cart!
