What I Learned in July 2010

Monthly reviews are my favourite tradition. Here’s how it works – every month I come up with some things I learned. Then, I ask you all to join in with some recent revelations of your own. And we all learn and grow and what-not. Or at least share a laugh at our own expense, because some of these lessons are both hard-fought and funny. Sound good?

So, without further ado, here are some things that I learned in July.

Things I learned in July

1. I learned that summer feels even better when you have to wait for it to arrive. After a cold June, a hot July has been just the ticket.

2. I discovered the joy of becoming an aunt for the first time.

Hannah and her cousin Tyson

3. I uncovered my own hypocrisy when I felt that dairy cows ought to be let outside, but I refuse to allow my own cat outside.

4. I tasted raspberries from my garden once again and re-learned their sweetness.

5. I encountered an opportunity for personal growth, when I had to wait 30 minutes for my friends to show up at a restaurant.

6. I learned that in parenting you shouldn’t make promises you can’t keep. And I also learned that a good face-painting job makes up for the time I forgot that.

7. I discovered that almost nothing feels better than finally getting stitches out of my mouth after 3 weeks. It’s right up there with finally getting the braces off my teeth, in fact.

8. I learned that sharing my dream with others is a powerful, powerful thing. I was afraid to do it, but it’s brought me so much joy.

9. For the 8 millionth time I was reminded that white shirts and toddlers are a bad combination.

10. I found out that I can still sew a mei tai in an evening, even 2 1/2 years after closing my baby carrier business. I also learned that, for me, sewing is way more fun when it’s not obligatory.

I hear you on the white shirts and toddlers. Just not a good combination. Not a great idea on my 3 year old either.

I always enjoy reading your blog. I check it every morning.

A baby carrier business?! I’d totally missed this part of your CV, how can it be! Raspberries are my favorite berry, especially now that those thornless varieties are available. But the don’t do well in my climate.

Crap, I don’t let my cats outside either. Does that mean I should stop buying free range eggs? LOL Oh the guilt!

  4. white clothes at any age do not work on me :(

and as for the indoor cats I have just one word – coyotes
unless a cow is the size of a small sheep and living out at UBC coyotes rarely cause them any trouble (quell the angst)

Just had an idea if you want a messy project to do with your kids, because who doesn’t want that? Maybe you could turn that white shirt into a tie-dye one with some rubber bands. I think my childhood is calling ;-)

We let our kitty outside but thankfully she doesn’t venture past the fence.

I hear you on the white t-shirts. I buy some of the cutest shirts but they are usually white which means they are destroyed within 10 min!

  7. I learned that my family and close friends are absolutely my #1 priority, but I don’t show that with my actions nearly enough.

I learned that if you suddenly stop moving your body but don’t stop plowing through chips, dip, and barbecue, your pants will stop fitting.

I learned that sometimes, the best way to move forward is to stop moving for a while and just see where the tide takes you.

I completely forgot it was the end of the month! Again! That’s two months in a row! I’m going to write every sentence with an exclamation point!

White clothes do not belong on children, and yet I just bought Em some white pants and a white dress which will probably end in a…!!!

I really enjoyed this post. I loved the photographs of your daughter getting her face painted and your son in his white tee shirt. Also, I am happy to hear that your mouth is on the mend. And I loved your comment about waiting in a restaurant being an opportunity for personal growth (am I catching sarcasm there or did you really work on patience, etc.?) I am a terrible wait-er, :-)

I learned that a whole lot of bubble wands can make an attempted photo shoot more amusing, if not more successful.

I learned that my husband really really REALLY hates packing (to move… he's OK packing for a trip) and that I'm better off never ever asking him to do it again, even if I have to hire someone to help me do it.

I love this idea! July was probably the most eye opening month I have ever had in my entire life.

White shirts are the bane of my existence. Yet they seem to sell only white onesies and shirts for LO’s.
