Monthly reviews are my favourite tradition. Here’s how it works – every month I come up with some things I learned. Then, I ask you all to join in with some recent revelations of your own. And we all learn and grow and what-not. Or at least share a laugh at our own expense, because some of these lessons are both hard-fought and funny. Sound good?
So, without further ado, here are some things that I learned in June.
Things I learned in June
1. I found out the hard way that salt water and digital cameras are not friends. Not even a little bit. But wrist straps and digital cameras just may be.
2. I learned rather a lot about cheese. Like how long pathogens can survive in raw milk cheeses, and how cheese-making is not for people with short attention spans.

3. I learned that if you’re going to have non-stop tapas and still be able to walk afterward, you have to know when to cry uncle. Because if you put food in front of me, I will eat it.
4. I discovered that before you decide to take a walk by yourself with two little kids, you need to know the route. Because while the scenery might be gorgeous, carrying a toddler for 2+ hours is not fun at all.

5. I missed out on a chance to meet an online friend because I didn’t think to let her know I’d be in the area. This made me sad.
6. I discovered that just like me, my 5-year-old daughter Hannah loves to feel the wind in her hair. I anticipate some fun times on the roller coaster in our future.

7. I found out that after you have dental surgery and your face bruises up, people start looking at you funny. I felt like I should be wearing a shirt that says, “My husband didn’t do this to me, my dentist did.”
8. As I tried to avoid laughing during said dental surgery, I learned that The Golden Girls really holds up. Much like Betty White herself.
9. I felt a thrill of victory when I finished a sweater! It’s the February Lady Sweater, and I used my friend Kirsten’s soft spun yarn.

10. I learned that the first strawberry of the season from your own garden is sweet indeed, even if the bad weather did delay it for weeks.

I forgot to add that you can get a lot accomplished by getting up at 5:30 am.

Don’t sweat missing me… there will be other opportunities, (the Island isn’t going anywhere and I suspect you’ll be back!)
I love the wind too…. when it is a blustery night, I have been known to stand out on my back patio in my PJs and close my eyes to the wind…. it feels so good! And of course when I am on it, the ferry deck always gets a visit — no matter how tangled my hair end up.
I’ve always admired people that can make something real out of knitting…. the sweater is great!
mmmm…. homegrown strawberries!

Things I learned in June:
Just because an opportunity presents itself doesn’t mean I have to take it. — I found a great property in a good location and was able to admit that the security of what we have now is more valuable to me and my husband right now.
Carzy is crazy no matter what facts are presented — my neighbour will believe that my 9 year old son is evil no matter how illogical that is, so I guess I will have to just ignore them. (and put up a tall fence).
They pass kids through elementarty school no matter how they think the child is doing — It is our district’s policy to never fail kids. Though I understand the reasoning on a “be nice” level, I do feel the pressure is off the teachers to make sure the kids grasp the learning materials. There are no consequences for not learning it. My 13 year old will be entering highschool next year with weak reading, poorly legible printing (my 9 year old prints better) and not knowing where Ottawa is on the map of Canada….. I am not proud of this, not at all. ADHD or not, this is unacceptable to me. The poor boy will be getting “homeschooled” this summer.
there is more, but I will leae it there.

I agree that carrying a toddler for long periods of time is no fun at all. Seriously what is about me and my kids, that they just love to be carried my me?
Both of my sisters have had that dental surgery and I remember how much pain they were in. So the fact that you worked on recovering with two kids underfoot, is not small feat.

What I learned in June:
I’ve learned that it is possi8ble to keep a house spotlessly clean with two children under the age of 7 – you just have to be away from the house for 8 hours a day!
I’ve learned that kittens are very feisty playmates and that they will take opportunities to attack your three year old when you are out of the room.
I’ve learned that freezing banana’s for banana bread is worthwhile only if you use the banana’s within 6 months.
I’ve learned that 3 year olds and *almost* 7 year olds tattle tale a LOT. This is mostly due to the fact that they spend 80% of their time together teasing each other (I got the biiiggger piece, I got the bluuuuue cup).

LOVE that sweater! As a non-knitter I am dying to know how much time it takes to make something like that. Perhaps it’s time for me to learn!
sweater envy combines with total feelings of amber pride.
you go girlfriend.
when/if we ever meet we are totally knitting together

I learned how to take a midnight meeting without having to pound a can of Coke to stay awake. Not sure this is a good thing.
Love that sweater!

The picture of Hannah running in the wind on the ferry brings back many childhood memories. It was so awesome when you were light enough to lean into the wind and have it hold your weight!
Congratulations on finishing the sweater – it looks impressively complicated! Lovely ocean and mountain colours, it’s perfectly BC!
I hope that someday I’ll taste a homegrown strawberry from my own garden. It sounds sweet!
