What I Learned in October 2009

Back in early October I reviewed some of the things that I learned in September. I enjoyed it, and so I decided to repeat the post. I am not above recycling an idea that worked once. So, without further ado, here are some things that I learned in October.

Things I learned in October.

1. Not to leave the butter within reach of the toddler.
He got into the butter

2. Two kids, when taken out in public, will always run in opposite directions.

3. How to needle felt.

4. What 42 pints of crushed tomatoes looks like all lined up on my counter.

5. That it really stinks for you when your kid has surgery, even though she’s totally fine.

6. My toddler is a much better climber than I realized.

7. I am an artist. Or, at least, I like to make art.

8. If you ask a 4-year-old to take your picture, you take your chances with the framing.
The winners!

9. If you’re going to let your 4-year-old draw the faces on the jack-o-lanterns, give some concrete guidelines or you’re going to have to carve hair.

10. How to sew a cape for Little Red Riding Hood.

Wow you had a busy October too!! Isn’t toddlerhood crazy/fun/non-stop action?!? For some reason, I seem to have had a touch of the amnesia after my first two graduated to pre-school/school-aged children. Now I have a toddler again, and climbing, and butter, and climbing some more;-) He always looks at me funny when I tell him to go put his shoes & coat on;-)

LOVE the pic of you in the pumpkin patch…I never post the photos Joshua takes of me because my um hips & tush are always in the foreground;-)

I’ve got my cuppa & am going to sit back & let your recent posts entertain me now…it’s my “mommy recharge” break :-)

Oh, and you asked a question didn’t you? In October I learned that when your crazy busy life gets the addition of several birthdays, harvest time, and Halloween it’s okay to take a little bloggy break…your friends will be there with smiles & wonderful stories to catch up on when you get back!!

That is a great post idea. I may use it some day. Although I can barely remember Oct, I am sure I learned something… oh yes, if you don’t clean the toilet yourself, it won’t get cleaned! :)

I’m not sure what I’ve learned…perhaps if you don’t want to constantly reboot your computer, move the tower out of toddler reach :)

I learned that if you leave your baby happily playing with a piece of paper for just a moment, she will eat the paper, choke, throw up all over herself and your white carpet, then your dinner will burn while you try to clean up her and the carpet!!! Lesson? Never take your eyes off the baby – that two minutes doing something else isn’t worth it!

What a fabulous way to recap the highs and lows and everyday craziness of life with kids! That’s a fantastically cute Little Red Riding Hood and her cape is perfect!

Oh, and what I learned in October:
    - if your kid is sick and you end up not going to the island for Thanksgiving, turkey dinner at the White Spot is more depressing than a regular dinner at home.
    - my 2.5 yr old isn’t scared of being surrounded by chickens.
    - giving a toddler a Sharpie isn’t always a bad idea.
Maybe I’ll do my own post, this is fun!

Love your pictures of all your learnings!I am learning that making goals really helps me to accomplish them.(like committing to planting over 120 bulbs and beginning some homemade Christmas gifts) I also learned that I can overcome my anxieties about visiting people with disabilities (especially the non verbal) and get more comfortable as I get to know them better.(I've been visiting a dear friend who had a stroke last spring)

  9. I’ve never heard of needle felting before. I just went back and read your old post about it as well as watched the video on Craftzine that you mentioned. It looks really fun! I used to do all sorts of crafts but I gave them up once I had kids as they were just too time-consuming. I am definitely putting needle felting on my to do list.

    What I learned in October:
-that I’ll come up with pretty much any excuse under the sun to avoid my macroeconomics homework
    – that a cake made with two boxes of mix lasts forever and ever and ever when there’s only a few people to eat it
    – that acupuncture is kind of ouchy and not as relaxing as I’d been led to believe
    – I can make a pretty good Thanksgiving dinner even if it was just for the four of us.

Love this post idea! I learned:
    - some interesting things about parenting from a couple workshops I attended
    - that blogging can be stressful, overwhelming and rewarding
    - what a mess my 9 month old can make when attempting to feed himself
    - how easy it is to get kids songs stuck in your head
    - that I can actually enjoy cooking (this is a big lesson for me)
Thanks for the opportunity to reflect.

    What I learned:
Medical Insurance people are not there to help you.
    Dental work is expensive.
There are many things I am thankful for all year long.
I can bring a laptop into a bowling alley and actually get some work done!
A LOT of teenagers are willing to dress up for free candy.

-that if i put the bate out there, something will bite

I love how you are a true blogger – snapping the picture of Jacob and the butter before getting him cleaned up!

The little felt pumpkin is so cute.

  14. Melodie says:

Ah yes, butter! My toddler likes butter too. And hey, great cape. My mom made me into Little Red Riding Hood when I was about 6 or 7 and we still have th cape and skirt lying around somewhere. Yours is much better though. Mine is definitely retro 70′s LRRH.
