What’s your Superpower?

Hannah’s into superheroes right now. Her favourite is WeatherMan (or sometimes WeatherWoman), a superhero of her own invention who controls the weather. Whenever there’s weather, she credits it to WeatherMan. Jon shared this with his co-worker who actually is a weatherman, and let’s just say that he’s rather tickled that someone would consider him a superhero.

Hannah also has visions of herself as a crime fighter. She’s told me that in her dreams she ‘makes bad guys choke, and saves the world.’ This all came about after some cars were broken into in her daycare’s parking lot. Since then she’s been trying to make sense of good and bad, as well as good people and bad people. In any case, I’m glad that in her dreams she is powerful.

So I started thinking, what if we were all to take some magic formula to turn us into superheroes? What would our superpowers be? My mom’s superpower would be fitting things into tight spaces. That woman can fit more food into a fridge than the laws of physics would strictly allow. And Hannah would be a very strong weather person, who makes it rain and chokes villains. Jacob, well he would be super fast, I think. He just wants to move.

I had a really hard time coming up with a superpower for myself. (Although I do sort of like the pro-breastfeeding shirts that read ‘I make milk, what’s your superpower?‘) I would like a superpower that isn’t specifically related to my kids. For example, I don’t want to be the Organizational Wonder, or Super Nose Wiper, or anything like that. But it took me a while to think about what I was good at. You know, something that I always had been good at, that I enjoyed in its own right. Finally it hit me. I would be Math Girl – using numbers to save the planet. Also, maybe inspiring a new generation of mathematical women. I would be sort of like the detectives from MathNet, only with a better outfit. And a cape. I would definitely need a cape.

So, what about you. If you could be a superhero, what sort of powers would you possess? What makes you feel powerful?

I have a skill for finding information…if I had know about this skill when I was in high school, I would have become a librarian. I suppose it’s not too late…and in fact, it would make more sense to study library science now in the age of the internet than back in the days of the card catalog.

Fitting things in tight spaces!? No way, I want something far more exciting.

I would be the Story Lady, in charge of making up tales for children. I’m working on a Super Flying Ladybug idea right now for a book for Jacob, where he rides it into fantastic little boy adventures.

Yup, either that or the Play Outside Lady (let’s go Hannah!)

I’d like the power to find extra time in the day! So I could maybe make a blog post more often than once a week or 2 LOL
